The Week in Senators Sports

          June 8, 2015

Highlights:

SUNY Ulster Athletics has earned the 2014-2015 All Sports Award for having the best overall college athletic program in the Mid-Hudson Conference Region 15 for its winning volleyball, golf and baseball seasons. SUNY Ulster last won the award in 2002.

The Senators were undefeated in conference women’s volleyball play posting a 10-0 record. Coached by Glenn Warnock, the team also has been selected as the winner of this year’s regional Team Sportsmanship award.

SUNY Ulster’s Golf team, coached by Jay Rhinehart, won its third straight conference golf crown this year and had two golfers compete in nationals (see below). Its men’s baseball team, coached by Steve Freer, finished third in conference standings and recently had Paddy Defino and Charlie Fina sign to Clarkson University and Mercy College, respectively.

Men’s soccer is gearing up for its first season this fall under new coach Richard Mattson. The college also offers men’s basketball, men’s tennis and women’s softball, as well as currently forming a co-ed Cross Country team for the fall.

Golf:

SUNY Ulster's Andre Manginelli and Troy Farley recently competed in the 2015 NJCAA Division III Golf Championships. The Nationals tournament was held June 2-5 at the Donald Ross-designed Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, where par is 72.

Manginelli shot rounds of 80-91-79-77 and his 4-day total of 327 was good enough for a tie for 54th. Farley finished 90th with a four-day total of 367.

Manginelli saved his best for nationals. "Except for a minor hiccup on day two, Andre played his best golf of the season, including a season low 77 on the last day," said head Coach Jay Rhinehart.

Manginelli's performance was the best among the five Mid-Hudson Conference Qualifiers and second best in Region XV.

"Unfortunately, Troy picked an inopportune time to have some of his worst rounds of the year. However, to his credit, he hung in there and finished the tournament with his best round of the week (86)," said Rhinehart.

"Overall, I'm extremely proud of both of these guys and the way they represented SUNY Ulster. I'm happy for Andre that he qualified for nationals and did so well after missing out on qualifying last year by just one stroke. And I'm very happy that Troy got to experience all that he did in his very first year," he said.

In addition to making it to nationals, both Manginelli and Farley were 1st Team All Mid-Hudson Conference and All Region XV selections this year. Manginelli was also named the 2015 Male Sportsman of the Year and Farley will be returning next year when the Senators will be going for a 4-peat of the Mid-Hudson Conference.

Congratulations SUNY Ulster Golf!

         March 23, 2015

Tennis: SUNY Ulster’s Tennis Team won its opening home match on March 19 against Broome Community College, at Total Tennis in Saugerties. Coach John Shelton reports that all five players won their single or double matches.

“The team is highly motivated and with six remaining matches, we have an excellent chance of improving our record from last year,” Shelton said.

Leading the team was Tom Delia, a sophomore from Saugerties; followed by Aadil Mallick, sophomore, New Paltz; David Smith, sophomore, New Paltz; Chris Farrell, freshman, Saugerties; and Rachel Adolphe, freshman, Kingston.  Joan Mena, a freshman from Kingston, did not play.

Upcoming matches are: April 1, away against Suffolk Community College; and April 2, home against Nassau Community College.

Baseball: Due to the snowy weather causing unplayable conditions, more than a dozen games have been cancelled, leaving our Senators itching to get out on the mound. If weather permits, The Senators could open their home season with a doubleheader versus Orange Community College on March 28, 12 p.m., followed by an away doubleheader against the same team on March 29, at noon.

Coach Steve Freer has assembled a roster of talented local players to compete in the Mid-Hudson Conference and Region XV this year. According to a story in the Daily Freeman, here’s the coach’s outlook on the season:

The Senators include seven players from Kingston, three each from Onteora and Saugerties, two from Highland and one each from Ellenville and Middletown.

“We had a good recruiting season,” Freer said. “I’m looking forward to seeing these guys play. Our goal is to compete and improve with every game.”

Two Kingston standouts, sophomores Micah Riddick and Sean Debrosky, lead the way. Riddick, an outfielder, was named as a conference and region second team all star in 2014, with Debrosky also earning conference second team honors.

Another returnee, Paddy Defino, is back as the Senators top catcher, with sophomore Matt Fletcher at first base and backing Defino up behind the plate. Transfer student Chris Ranalli and newcomer Joe Dittus will share time at second base, as well as playing other positions this season.

Sophomore A.J. Scarselli is at shortstop and returnee Nick Grant and freshman Max Cruz will split time at third. Freshman Chris Saitch, and either Cruz or Dittus, will also play in the outfield. Freshmen Will Molloy and Travis Freer, and sophomore Eric Porter make up the rest of the position players.

Golf: With 10 golfers on this year’s team, including eight new recruits, Coach Jay Rhinehart is optimistic about the season ahead. Also faced with unplayable greens, the 11-year head coach is hoping to get his golfers swinging soon.

As the two-time defending Mid-Hudson Conference Champions, the Senators are going for a “threepeat” this season.

“Beyond that, we want to do as well at regionals as we possibly can,” Rhinehart said. “If we don't win the regionals as a team then we always strive to get some of our golfers qualified for nationals as individuals.”

Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team remained undefeated with a 6-0 record, beating Dutchess Community College and Westchester Community College last week.

The Senators swept Dutchess Community in a conference match on Sept. 30, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-22.

Meghan Hurley handed out 21 assists and had six digs and two aces. Wallkill’s Danielle Hrelja had eight kills and four aces and Jessica Muller of Saugerties had eight kills and seven digs in the win.

On Oct. 2, SUNY Ulster dropped the first game, then bounced back to defeat Westchester 3-1 with scores of: 20-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-16.

Coach Glenn Warnock says it was a great effort by all, crediting Alexcis Moses, Jessica Muller and Jordan Smith for putting the ball away consistently.  Meghan Hurley started out slowly but really showed why she is the top setter in the conference by dishing out 48 assists, he says.

Samantha Shultis had over 30 digs and passed the ball really well allowing the offense to flow.  Danielle Hrelja and Kelsey Valencia both played their normal steady consistent games that the team counts on, and, as usual, came up big when the Senators needed it most.

“It's rare a team can keep its composure and make that comeback once, never mind twice in the same match,” said Coach Glenn Warnock. “We had a great crowd and they were really treated to some exciting volleyball last night.  3-0 is a great start. We are still practicing hard every day to improve our game.”

Baseball: The SUNY Ulster Fall Baseball got off to a great start on Sept. 13, Coach Steve Freer reports. The Senators swept Columbia Greene Community College in a double-header at Cantine Field in Saugerties.

The first game was won 14-4. Five Senator Freshmen held Columbia Greene to only one base runner for the first six innings. “All our freshmen threw great and kept CGCC off balance throughout the entire first game,” Freer says.

The Senators won the second game 1-0.  Six Sophomore Senators held the CGCC offense to only four hits. Max Cruz picked up the win and Christian Smith saved it for him. Pitching and defense played extremely well both games, the coach said.

Offensively, numerous Senators had a great day, including Devin Rios, Micah Riddick, Eric Porter, Bernie Smith, AJ Scarselli, Sam Fisher, Matt Fletcher, Charlie Fina and Nick Grant. All of these players had at least two hits and at least one RBI on the day.

“Overall it was great pitching, great defense and timely hitting that contributed to our successful day,” he says.

Volleyball

Aiming to repeat last year’s Mid-Hudson Conference Championship, the women’s volleyball team opened its season at home with a 25-4, 25-19, 25-12 sweep of Sullivan County Community College on Sept. 18.

Meghan Hurley distributed 20 assists and served up two aces, keying an offense featuring Danielle Hrelja (four kills, six aces, five digs), Jessica Muller (11 kills, two digs) and Alexcis Moses (six kills).

The Lady Senators went 9-1 in conference play in 2013, and finished 12-5 overall. SUNY Ulster lost 3-2 to Queensborough in the Region XV quarterfinals.

Here’s what Coach Glenn Warnock had to say about the season ahead in the Daily Freeman on Sept. 16:

“Our goals are to repeat as (conference) champions and secure a home match in regionals,” said Warnock, now in his 10th season at SUNY Ulster. “This might be the most talented team I’ve had at Ulster, but talent isn’t the only thing that wins. The women must prove they can work together.”

Ulster returns five players from last year’s squad, including Saugerties High product Samantha Shultis, Danielle Hrelja from Wallkill, John A. Coleman Catholic graduate Meghan Hurley, Ellenville’s Melissa Rosado and Kelsey Valencia from Wawarsing Christian Academy.

“Sam is a spark plug for us with her enthusiasm and hustle,” Warnock said. “Danielle is a steady, calming force with great power and a lot of court experience. Meghan is our starting setter and she has great decision making and communication skills. Kelsey is a strong outside hitter and is able to read the other team’s hitters well. Melissa made great leaps in her ability and court sense, so she’ll continue to grow.”

Warnock is expecting big contributions from newcomers Jessica Muller of Saugerties and Kingston’s Alexcis Ausanio-Moses.

“Jessica will be one of our go-to hitters in the front and she’s very athletic and moves well on the court,” he said. “Alexcis is versatile and she can attack from all three front row positions and passes well from the back.”

Ashley Agor of New Paltz, and three Rondout Valley graduates, Makenzi Atkinson, Jordan Smith and Kayley Mannello, are others that Warnock said will see court time.

“Ashley is a steady outside hitter and has a good serve,” he said. “Makenzi can play multiple positions, Jordan is a strong blocker and can be a dominant hitter and Kayley doesn’t shy away from anything.”

Warnock said Alicia Kinch from Ellenville will prove difficult for opponents with her strong left-handed hitting.

“If we stick together as a team, we can achieve our goals and a lot more,” Warnock added.
